NuGen welcomes today’s news that an agreement has been reached on commercial issues to take forward the Hinkley Point C development in Somerset

NuGen CEO Tom Samson said: “Today’s news about Hinkley is positive for other nuclear developers – such as NuGen. It shows confidence in the UK’s approach to developing new nuclear build, and sends a positive message to future investors.

“The UK needs new nuclear – it offers long-term security of supply, is competitive on cost, is low-carbon and limits our future dependence on potentially expensive imported energy.

“New nuclear build will have a huge positive impact for the UK economy, with around 60% of the cost of building these plants being spent in the UK with UK companies. During operation, NuGen’s Moorside Power Station will employ more than 1,000 people in highly skilled roles for 60 years.”

22nd May 2013

Robert Zadora and Manuel Marco announced as executive directors at NuGen

NuGen, the UK nuclear company owned by GDF SUEZ and IBERDROLA,
today (22 May) announced the appointment of Robert Zadora and Manuel Marco as Executive Directors of the company.

Robert and Manuel will now be in charge of the next development phase of NuGen’s Moorside project in West Cumbria, to which the company is 100% committed.

Both directors have extensive experience of developing major nuclear energy projects. Manuel Marco is a physicist with a Masters in Nuclear Engineering and is Head of Nuclear Development at IBERDROLA. He joined IBERDROLA in 1977 and has been involved in the start-up of four nuclear power stations, three in Spain and one in Mexico, and has also worked on new nuclear build projects in Rumania.

Robert Zadora has a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was involved for 14 years at EDF in the construction and commissioning of new nuclear power stations in France, South Africa and China. Since then Robert has worked on major engineering projects for GDF SUEZ for more than 15 years.

The move comes as NuGen progresses in to a new phase of the Moorside project. NuGen is making good progress with its site assessment, currently analysing results after having successfully completed on-site work of phase one.

NuGen is also moving forward with preparations for phase two of the site assessment, the company’s main focus for 2013. This new phase will involve sub-surface work, including the drilling of boreholes on-site to enable a variety of tests. NuGen will keep stakeholders updated on this work, which will begin in due course.

NuGen would like to thank Alfio Vidal and Olivier Carret, who are returning to the parent companies following their contribution to the initial phase of the Moorside project.

NuGen is progressing at its own pace, on what is a very long-term project. We are building a robust business case, focusing on a prudent path, working to de-risk the project before exercising the option.

It is important to underline NuGen is 100% committed – and continuing to work towards the same time-scale and expectations contained within the Government’s National Policy Statement.

The Moorside project could result in the largest-ever investment in West Cumbria by the private sector, and NuGen is working hard to take forward this long-term project of such significance to the region.

11th February 2013

YouGov Poll is good news for new nuclear

NuGen today welcomed news of the publication of a YouGov survey that shows public support for new nuclear power stations in the UK remains strong.

The respected pollsters found nuclear is the preferred option for a future power source for Britain’s energy needs among the UK public.

The public opinion survey shows 26 per cent of people support clean nuclear energy, while 18 per cent favour wind power -  with a further 18 per cent favouring wave/tidal power. Some 5 per cent back gas – and only 2 per cent back coal.

A NuGen spokesman said the results were a sign of public support for new nuclear power stations.

“Working to develop our Moorside project in West Cumbria , the UK’s nuclear heartland, we see support for the nuclear industry on a regular basis. We will ensure we don’t take that support for granted as we build our business case to take forward up to 3.6GW of new nuclear in the region. It is also good to know support for nuclear remains positive across the UK.”

NuGen confirms 100% commitment to its new nuclear development project in West Cumbria

In the wake of  today’s decision by Centrica’s to withdraw from plans to develop new nuclear power stations with EDF Energy, NuGen moved to confirm its commitment to its own Moorside project in West Cumbria.

NuGen does not comment on other consortia, or their projects, but in response to inquiries following Centrica’s decision to withdraw from new nuclear development in the UK, NuGen re-affirmed its 100% commitment to developing its Moorside project through to final investment decision.

NuGen is developing plans to bring forward up to 3.6 GW of new nuclear power on land it has an option to buy in West Cumbria.

The company has undertaken extensive community engagement – and began an initial eight-month site assessment in October 2011.

NuGen responds to the Cumbrian Councils’ vote on MRWS

NuGen supports the UK Government’s policy, set out clearly in the “Managing Radioactive Waste Safely” White Paper of 2008. NuGen also supports the voluntarism approach to finding a host community, also contained in the White Paper.

Today’s decision by Cumbria County Council not to progress to the next stage of the MRWS process was one that lay with the respective communities, and their representatives.

The Government has confirmed that “setting us on the course to resolve the problem of radioactive waste is essential for any consideration of nuclear power’s role in the future.”

We look forward to clarity from the Government in the light of today’s “no” vote by Cumbria County Council. A clear and credible process will do much to increase confidence and support for a new generation of nuclear reactors in the UK.

NuGen recognises the disappointment among some of its regional stakeholders – after Copeland Borough Council – the area within which NuGen wants to develop its Moorside project -  voted “yes” to stay in the process. NuGen also noted the results of last year’s Ipsos Mori Poll that showed high support to stay engaged in the MRWS process among local people – as a positive sign that communities are prepared to engage with Government on this issue

NuGen welcomes Capability Report & Government Action Plan

NuGen warmly welcomed the publication of the Nuclear Industry Association’s influential UK Nuclear Capability Report.

The report highlights the progress being made in the UK to improve capability to deliver new nuclear power stations.

The key report was released on the same day as the Government’s own Nuclear Supply Chain Action Plan. This lists the actions designed to help the UK benefit to the maximum from the significant opportunities afforded by a new nuclear build programme in the UK.

NuGen took an active role in the development of the report. A NuGen spokesman said the news as a positive step-forward.

“The NIA’s capability report is a very respected publication. Much is being done to ensure the UK is in a good position to benefit from new build, and this report, combined with the Government’s Supply Chain Action Plan, is very helpful.”

NuGen’s view on NW Coast Connections progress

National Grid’s North-West Coast Connections project is of major importance to the future economic prosperity of West Cumbria.

Following public consultation National Grid has now decided to take two of the original six options forward. This progress is of huge local significance as modernising and extending transmission lines will provide a connection for several major energy infrastructure projects. These in turn could provide a major boost to the regional economy - and will be of national importance in securing future energy supplies and in meeting the UK’s carbon reduction targets.

Diego Molina

Staff at NuGen and parent companies IBERDROLA and GDF SUEZ were shocked to learn this week of the passing of NuGen director Diego Molina.  Diego Molina passed away this week unexpectedly. These lines, written with deep sorrow, would like to profile not only his great professionalism but also his great human values. All who had the privilege to work with him would agree that he always had his door open for a chat. With a perennial smile and always attentive, he would find solutions to problems, providing wise advice.  If he didn´t have the time, he would write a note, and at the first opportunity, he would contact that person...

NuGen Statement  – Electricity Market Reform White Paper

NuGen welcomes the publication by Government of the White Paper on Electricity Market Reform (EMR) as another step in the right direction towards creating the market conditions necessary to encourage investment in low-carbon energy generation such as nuclear power.

Olivier Carret, Chief Operating Director said: “We are fully supportive of the UK Government’s objectives to create a market which delivers security of energy supply, reduces carbon emissions and maintains affordability for consumers.  Each of these elements is essential to ensure that the UK has an effective future energy mix and reform of the electricity market framework is an essential step to facilitate this.”

Alfio Vidal, Chief Nuclear Director said: “The EMR White Paper is one of the major steps required to ensure that new nuclear build can happen in the UK and we were pleased most recently to see the National Policy Statement on Nuclear confirming the suitability of sites, including NuGen’s, for new nuclear build.  We also continue to watch with interest the on-going Generic Design Assessment by the Office for Nuclear Regulation who are reviewing the suitability of reactor designs for the UK.”

NuGen looks forward to seeing the EMR White Paper move through the legislative process.
